Information Concerning Instructor Training
The Instructor Development Course (IDC) consists of two parts.
- The first part is the Assistant Instructor Course (minimum 3 days) and;
- Second part is the Open Water Scuba Instructor Course (minimum 4 days).
Prequisites
Independent learning prerequisite:
- Prior to the start of an Instructor Development Course, Assistant Instructor course or OWSI program, an individual must complete all 16 IDC Knowledge Reviews.
- This should be accomplished by self-study.
To enroll in an IDC or Assistant Instructor course, an individual must:
- Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification with another recognized recreational diver training organization.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months – and valid through to the end of the I.E. at least.
- Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water SCUBA dives and have documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving. (To attend the Instructor Examination, the diver must have a minimum of 100 dives).
- Submit documentation of any equivalent certification for entry-level, advanced, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization
- If not a PADI Divemaster, have successfully completed the PADI Divemaster Course diver rescue skills assessment.
- Be an EFR Instructor
OWSI Program Prerequisites
To enroll in an OWSI program, an individual must:
- Be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor or as a current instructor member in good standing with another recreational diver training organization.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months.
- Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water dives including documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving. (To attend the Instructor Examination, the diver must have a minimum of 100 dives).
- Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months.
- Submit documentation of any equivalent certification for entry-level advance, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization.
